Beyond The Villa

Things to Do in Tobago

Your villa is just the start. Reef tours, deep sea fishing, island festivals and home cooked flavor are all a short drive away.

Tobago moves at its own pace, and that is exactly the point. Between beach days there is a whole island of reef tours, fishing grounds, local festivals and unhurried home cooking waiting outside the gate. Our team is always happy to help you plan any of it, just ask. Ready to stay? Browse our private-pool villas in Bon Accord, Mount Irvine and Mason Hall.

Beaches & Water

On The Water

Buccoo Reef & the Nylon Pool

Glass bottom boats leave from Buccoo Jetty most mornings, gliding over living coral before anchoring at the Nylon Pool, a natural sandbar barely three feet deep in the middle of the open sea.

Pigeon Point & Store Bay

Tobago's two best known beaches, both a short drive from every Sunsational villa. Calm, shallow water that suits first time swimmers and families as easily as anyone chasing the perfect photo.

Snorkeling, Diving & Sailing

Reef life sits just offshore almost everywhere on the island. Local operators run half day snorkel and dive trips, plus sunset catamaran cruises along the coast.

Culture

Festivals & Local Life

The island's calendar runs from Easter through Carnival, most of it free to walk into and only a short drive from Bon Accord, Mount Irvine or Mason Hall.

Tobago Jazz, Music & Golf Weekend

A lively three-day island experience combining live jazz performances, social events and golf in Tobago's beautiful surroundings. It brings together music lovers, golfers and visitors for a relaxed weekend of culture, entertainment and warm island hospitality.

Buccoo Goat & Crab Races

An Easter Tuesday tradition since 1925, when goat racing was declared the island's answer to Easter Monday's horse races. Jockeys run alongside their goats on a leash at the Buccoo Integrated Facility, followed by a far more leisurely crab race.

Tobago Heritage Festival

Running from mid-July to Emancipation Day on August 1st since 1987, with no single stage: every village hosts its own night. Moriah performs an Ole Time Wedding, Les Coteaux tells Folk Tales, and Charlotteville dances the Cocoa.

Blue Food Festival

Held every October at the Bloody Bay Recreation Ground and running since 1998, this festival celebrates dasheen, the root vegetable that turns blue when cooked and gives the event its name. Expect dasheen prepared a dozen ways, live music and craft stalls.

Tobago Carnival

Tobago runs its own carnival season in October and November, separate from Trinidad's February carnival, with steelpan, soca and a street parade that carries the island's own, more laid back energy.

Buccoo Sunday School

A street party that has run every Sunday night in Buccoo since 1972. Steelpan opens the evening around 8pm before the main sound system takes over past 11, right across from the beach.

Eat & Drink

Local Flavor

Crab & Dumpling

Tobago's national dish. Crab is slow cooked in a bold curry sauce and served with simple flour dumplings. A must-try if you have never tasted a true Tobago crab and dumpling.

Saturday Soup

A beloved Tobago tradition: a hearty pot simmered slowly and sold across the island, traditionally on a Saturday. Made with local ground provisions, vegetables, herbs and seasonings, it is often enjoyed with dumplings and meat or fish. More than a meal, Saturday soup is a comforting taste of home and a reason to gather around the table.

Store Bay Food Hub

A row of family run huts serving bake and shark, curried conch with local provisions, pelau and many other local specialties that have fed beachgoers at Store Bay for decades.

Deep Sea Fishing

Charlotteville

Home to the Tobago International Game Fishing Tournament, drawing anglers to waters where the Caribbean, the Atlantic and the Orinoco's outflow all meet.

Speyside

Base for the Trinidad and Tobago Game Fishing Association's own tournament, and a launch point for charters year round.

Best Season

October to April favors marlin, sailfish, wahoo, tuna and dorado. The calmer months from May to September turn up barracuda, kingfish, bonito and snapper.

Sporting

On The Move

The Great Race

An offshore powerboat race from Trinidad to Tobago every August, running since 1969 and one of the longest standing races of its kind anywhere. The roughly 90 mile course finishes at Store Bay to a beach full of spectators.

Watersports

Tobago's Atlantic coast picks up a steady breeze that suits kite surfing and windsurfing, alongside the calmer kayaking and paddleboarding found on the Caribbean side.

Nature

Nature & Adventure

The Main Ridge Forest Reserve, protected since 1776, is the oldest legally protected rainforest in the Western Hemisphere and a short drive from Bon Accord and Mason Hall alike. Guided walks wind past the Argyle Waterfall's three cascading pools, and a short boat ride from Speyside reaches Little Tobago, a seabird sanctuary home to red billed tropicbirds and frigatebirds.
